Fruit basket FAQs

How did fruit baskets start?
The act of storing fruits in a basket began when baskets were first invented. Baskets were and still are made with many different materials such as wicker, bamboo, plastic, flax, wheat, and grass. They were originally created to be used for practical purposes such as transporting fruits, grain and nuts. Later, they became a decorative element with some instances of baskets made from more unusual components like crystal glass. Baskets traditionally are made by hand and continue to be so today, as it is still much too difficult for a machine to weave a basket together using the same hand techniques that make the m special in the first place. Because of the special attention and care to detail needed for basket weaving, it evolved to be an art form in some cultures, such as the Native Americans who created beautiful baskets for various purposes.

When was the earliest gift in a basket?
Thought the modern day gift baskets may seem like a contemporary phenomenon, the use of baskets dates far back in ancient history. One of the earliest possibly moments of this is the religious story of Moses, whose mother put him a wicker basket and hid him on the river’s edge in order to protect him. Another example is of the goddess Demeter from Greek mythology, who being the goddess of harvest and fertility, used baskets to carry seeds from place to place. Her worshippers would provide offerings by presenting baskets of food.

What’s the best way to arrange a fruit basket?
The most basic way is to first, gather up some good quality fruits of your choice, second, choosing a basket best suited for the amount of fruits (the basket needs to be full, so be careful of choosing a basket too big), and finally organizing the fruits into the basket so that the larger ones are placed first, then medium sized fruits, then the smallest fruits so that they do not get crushed underneath. It is strongly recommended to also add personal touches to the fruit basket, like adding flowers, tying a bow on the handle, and wrapping the whole thing in cellophane before giving. Another thing to consider is the person you are making the basket for. What personality the person has and what types of food the person likes are some of the factors that determine what would make the best gift basket. But generally speaking, as long as the fruits look good and organized neatly, you can’t go wrong with this all-purpose gift!
